Community Climate Action in Tanzania: Launching Phase 2 of the DOT–Cisco Climate Corps Program

As climate change affects everyday life in Tanzania, real solutions are not just coming from big meetings or global talks, they are starting in local communities, led by youth who live the reality and are ready to take action.

Building on the momentum of its successful first phase, DOT Tanzania, in partnership with the Cisco Foundation, is proud to launch Phase 2 of the Climate Corps Program, a bold, youth-led initiative that places young Tanzanians at the forefront of climate awareness, education, and community-based solutions.

What Is the Climate Corps Program?

The DOT–Cisco Climate Corps Program is a community-driven initiative designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and tools to lead climate action at the grassroots level. The program taps into the power of youth leadership to:

  • Raise awareness on climate change and environmental sustainability
  • Mobilize local communities to adopt eco-friendly practices
  • Drive innovative, low-cost climate solutions
  • Promote behavior change through education and advocacy

In Phase 1, the program activated a network of youth Climate Champions across five regions; Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Pemba, Dar es Salaam, and Mwanza who reached hundreds of community members with campaigns on plastic reduction, tree planting, responsible consumption, and climate justice.

What is New in Phase 2?

Phase 2 deepens the impact by expanding the program’s reach, strengthening its methodology, and amplifying youth voices in climate action. It now covers 10 regions: Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Tanga, Arusha, Dodoma, Morogoro, Iringa, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, and Pwani, bringing climate awareness and action closer to even more communities.

A total of 48 youth will be joining the program in this phase, contributing their energy, creativity, and leadership to drive local solutions.

Here is what to expect in this phase:

  • Advanced Climate Leadership Training for returning and new youth champions

  • Community-led climate solutions, such as waste management models, sustainable agriculture practices, and green entrepreneurship

  • Partnerships with local governments, schools, and civil society organizations to mainstream climate awareness and action

  • Creative storytelling and digital campaigns that document and inspire change

  • Data collection and community mapping to identify key environmental challenges and track local progress

This phase goes beyond awareness; it focuses on building resilience and creating practical, sustainable solutions that communities can own and sustain.

What is Next?

As Phase 2 unfolds, we will continue to share stories of impact, highlight the work of our Climate Corps Champions, and explore how grassroots leadership is transforming communities across Tanzania.

Together with youth at the center, we are building a movement for a climate-smart, resilient, and inclusive future.

Stay tuned. The climate action journey continues, stronger, smarter, and greener than ever.
