Climate Action in Action: Empowering Youth with Waste Management and Tree Planting at The Upendo Foundation
At The Upendo Foundation Center in the Kilimajaro region, Dina and Winnie, as dedicated Climate Champions hosted a transformative event focused on environmental education.
Our mission was to empower 15 teenagers and 3 staff members with essential knowledge on waste management and conservation.
The event featured an interactive workshop that combined hands on activities with informative sessions. We taught participants how to sort waste properly, recycle effectively, and reduce their overall waste. To support their efforts, we provided two large dustbins for the center, giving them the tools needed for proper waste disposal.
A memorable part of the day was the tree-planting activity. Each person planted one of 20 fruit trees. This not only showed their commitment to protecting the environment but also made a positive impact on the local ecosystem.
The workshop was a success, with participants showing great enthusiasm. One notable outcome was the teenagers decision to start a bottle collection project. Inspired by what they learned, they began collecting bottles to sell to recycling centers instead of throwing them away. This initiative demonstrates their commitment to the environment and the practical use of the skills they acquired.
Overall, the event provided valuable knowledge, instilled a sense of responsibility, and set the stage for ongoing environmental efforts. The attendees are now better equipped to contribute to a sustainable future and make a positive difference in their community.
